Here’s a trick you can try. If you have an audio plugin with an analogue VU meter, put it on the metronome track. I have a Focusrite Scarlett Compressor which works well. The input needle will jump in time with the beat rather like an old school metronome. If you then delete the output on the metronome track (which usually defaults to ‘master’) there will be no sound but the needle still jumps in time.
I’ve tried visual metronomes before (such as getting the lights on Ableton Push to flash in time) and I have found it much harder to keep the beat than an audible click. However, if you make the first loop a heavily quantised midi or drum loop, you can use that to keep time for the rest of the song.
